What does life 'want'?
If the smallest, most insignificant life forms could be said to 'want' anything, they'd want more. More of whatever feeds them to make more of themselves.
Birds want it, bees want it, even educated fleas want it, MORE!
Let's call this a basic axiom. Any life form wants more of/for itself.
But, what do you do if you are thinking beings and you have enough safety, enough food and your population is expanding with no limiting factor in sight?
Well, you still want more, right?
Perhaps you want life itself to be more. Perhaps you want more for yourself. More money, more power, more followers, more certainty more meaning, more of something, anything!
I read up on the effects of the naturally occurring drug DMT(apparently 'gives' you your dreams). If taken in sufficient dose for 'recreation' one is 'propelled' into a 'spiritual realm' where there are beings who replicate 'crazily'(?), and they tell you to do what they do! Apparently it is a very profound experience and the 'message' is that, in short, we want more!
I think that this yearning for more can be seen in every addiction from food to booze to cigarettes to sex, from coffee to cocaine to heroin, from television to video games to business to politics and religion.

I think you hit on a central problem we face pboy: as products of evolution we are programmed to consume anything that provides a reproductive advantage in the short term. Long term consequences were never a consideration until the advent of recorded history. That's our genetic heritage. But with our somewhat pliable minds can't we account for our limitations and take steps to mitigate our consumptive nature? Too soon to tell.
So where do we find this naturally occuring DMT?? :-)
Actually Stacy, it is made in your pineal gland.
Here's a list of plants that it is found in..
Acacia spp. (Maiden's Wattle)
Anadenanthera spp. (Yopo)
Arundo donax (Giant River Reed)
Desmanthus illinoensis (Bundle Flower)
Diplopterys cabrerana (Chagro-panga)
Mimosa tenuiflora (=hostilis)(Jurema)
Phalaris Grass (Reed Canary Grass)
Psychotria viridis
Virola spp. (EpeƱa)
I guess I have to agree with you here. We always want more.
I like 'White Wedding!" better.
"White Wedding" is good, but "Rebel Yell" entered my head as I read your post.
Sorry ;-)
Great post pboy! Very entertaining read!
I of course liked the "birds and bees" part best.
That's exactly it! Thank you by default. When we were bickering about the validity of religion as a 'mental construct', I kept thinking about which chemicals provided what for the religous experience.
Obviously there is more to behavior than just chemicals. But it does get to the root of things in a way.
I was thinking about posting on mental illness and religion, and so I will, you've inspired me.
I put it up pboy.
For something almost completely arbitrary. I used a Jimi Hendrix quote on the post and was listening to some of his stuff.
I've got a burden against the mythos of Hendrix. I don't think his body of work would've been nearly as powerful without Mitch Mitchell. That guy was incredible.
Nobody's bitin on the Hendrix comment? That's good though: one, my theory's correct, two it's correct because everyone agrees with me by default.
oneblood.
I'm totally 'lost' on the Jimi Hendrix references thingy. Sorry.
I was just havin fun.
What type of music do you like pboy? I assumed it was classic rock. My bad.
The Pogues perhaps?
Music might be one of the few things on the planet with diametrically opposed opinions and no history of genocide. It's a beautiful thing.
Yea, I like that, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy!", song and, "The ants are my friends, they're blowin' in the wind", one.
Cross-eyed Mary, Bloody well right!, "MY God!' by Jethro Tull"! is a good religious one.
awesome blog, do you have twitter or facebook? i will bookmark this page thanks. lina holzbauer
